The Purpose and Reasoning Behind This Celebration

According to Oyebanji Akins, “the Ojude oba” festival is fascinating to him as a tradition that began with 4-6 Muslim families: Alase, Sote, Kuku, Otubu, and Alatise.

Where every third day after the Muslim holiday, Ileya, these families gather to honor the king, celebrating a peaceful year.

The chosen family member rides a horse while drummers use their instruments to speak metaphorically to other families.

The carnival has been organized annually since the current king, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, ascended the throne in 1960, making it exactly 64 years today.
